What is the Need for Ferolite Gaskets?

We all have heard about Ferolite gaskets but very few know what these are and what they do. Ferolite gaskets and seals serve the primary purpose of effectively sealing at least two surfaces together to prevent leakage of gases or liquids, thus making them air and water-proof. While these components are primarily used in mechanical or industrial applications, they can also be used in residential settings.

Typically composed of flexible materials such as rubber or cork, metal gaskets are also available for enhanced durability. The gasket is placed between the two surfaces, and the surfaces are then brought together and secured using various methods.

Non-Asbestos Jointing Sheets use a combination of aramid fiber, mineral fiber, high-quality NBR, and natural fiber. These sheets have various practical uses, including:

• Serving as a suitable water/oil-resistant gasket material for light to medium loads.

• Being suitable for low working pressures, such as in transformers, compressors, and other easily deformable components with low surface pressure, such as valve covers and containers in internal combustion engines.

Through this process, the gasket or seal will compress, holding the two surfaces together and preventing any leakage from the joints. Gaskets are primarily used in mechanical engineering, automotive, aviation, and plumbing industries.

However, they are also necessary in other fields where large containers filled with liquids and gases are present. Gaskets are available for various types of sealing applications, including but not limited to, drain washers, washing machines, and engines.

Most gaskets are created by cutting sheet materials such as:

• Paper

• Fiberglass

• Rubber

Few gaskets are specifically made with asbestos, as they must be composed of a special material that has both yielding and distorting capabilities to be applied and firmly fill the surfaces while sealing any small imperfections. Some gaskets require a sealant applied to their surfaces to function correctly, and they are made from different types of materials.

Typically utilized in industrial settings, these gaskets must withstand high pressure and compressive loads to protect the material. Fiber gaskets are particularly useful for this purpose, and the lifespan of the gasket is dependent on the applied pressure. The higher the compressive load, the longer the gasket will last.

Due to their use in mechanical applications, gaskets should be manufactured to the highest possible standards, and there are various methods for measuring the pressure efficiency of the materials used. The most common and efficient technique for testing the characteristics of gaskets is the "hot pressure test." Every reputable manufacturer publishes and provides the results of these tests to ensure that their products meet established standards.
